A method for preparing a flame retardant copolyester resin composition is provided to minimize a side reaction by a phosphorous compound, to prevent a reduction of the reaction rate, and to produce the copolyester resin composition having excellent flame retardancy. A method for preparing a flame retardant copolyester resin composition including 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol includes the steps of: (a) esterifying 100 parts by weight of an acid component comprising terephthalic acid or dimethylterephthalate, and 80-120 parts by weight of an alcohol component comprising 40-80mol% of ethylene glycol and 20-60mol% of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol under pressure of 0.1-3.0 kg/cm^2 at temperature of 230-260 °C for an average stay time of 3-6 hours; (b) adding 6-20 parts by weight of a phosphorous compound represented by the following formula 1 to the esterified reaction product, and subjecting the admixture to condensation under atmospheric pressure at temperature of 230-300 °C for an average stay time of 30-120 minutes; and (c) subjecting the esterified reaction product to polycondensation under the reduced pressure of 0.01-1 torr at temperature of 230-300 °C for an average stay time of 100-300 minutes. |
