The method involves primarily transferring motive force to near plate cylinders (1) of pressure units through motive force transmission mechanism (K). The motive force is secondarily transferred to far plate cylinders, while maintaining pressure units in uncoupling state. The pressure units are maintained in intervention state during transfer of motive force to near plate cylinders, and are maintained in uncoupling state during transfer of motive force to far plate cylinders, so as to switch the phases of the appropriate plate cylinders into identical phase. An independent claim is included for a plate cylinder phase switching device for printer.
