A process for producing a magnetic recording medium comprising a base serving as a nonmagnetic substrate and, formed on the base, a magnetic recording layer and a protective layer. The process for magnetic recording medium production includes a hot pressing step in which lubricant migration from the protective layer to a mirror surface of a metallic press plate is significantly inhibited, while enabling the protective layer to retain satisfactory marring resistance and satisfactory adhesion to the magnetic recording layer and maintaining the satisfactory recording/reproducing characteristics of the magnetic recording medium. The process forproducing a magnetic recording medium comprises: a step in which a multilayer structure is formed on the base serving as a nonmagnetic substrate, the structure being composed of an adhesive layer, a magnetic recording layer, and a protective layer arranged in this order from the side near the base; and a step in which the multilayer structure is hot-pressed from over the protective layer to embed the multilayer structure in the base so that the surface of the base and the surface of the protective layer in the multilayer structure form the same smooth plane. The process is characterized in that the protective layer comprises: particles of amixture comprising polyethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene; and a binder resin. |
