PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a transmission defect of a driving force in a driving mechanism.SOLUTION: A recording apparatus includes: a carriage having a recording head mounted thereon and reciprocating; a driving mechanism for moving the carriage; a position detecting means for detecting a position of the carriage; and a determining means for determining the presence/absence of a transmission defect of a driving force in the driving mechanism on the basis of a speed of the carriage which is guided by the result detected by the position detecting means.
