The method involves storing specified events in a non-volatile data memory (20) after installation of a microcontroller (10) of an airbag controller (1) in a vehicle in response to a trigger signal. A delete function (12) is implemented for deleting the stored event data in the non-volatile data memory, where the delete function is blocked in normal operation, and is only released by predetermined steps. The delete function is released by a permanent mechanical alteration in the airbag controller when the permanent mechanical alteration is detected. An independent claim is also included for a control device for a vehicle.
