PURPOSE: A multi-speed transmission is provided to offer improved packaging with a reduced size and weight through improved efficiency, responsiveness, smoothness. CONSTITUTION: First, second, third, and fourth planetary gear sets (14,16,18,20) each have first members (14A,16A,18C,20A), second members (14B,16B,18B,20C), and third members(14C,16C,18A,20B). An input member (12) is continuously connected for common rotation with the second members of the first planetary gear set. An output member (22) is continuously connected for common rotation with the third members of the third planetary gear set and the second members of the fourth planetary gear set. Torque transmitting mechanisms include three clutches (24,26,2) and four brakes (30,32,34,36) that are actuated in three combinations to establish a plurality of forward gear ratios and one reverse gear ratio. The torque transmitting mechanisms are selectively engageable to interconnect at least one of the first, second, third members and at least one of the first, second, third members and a fixing member. |
