PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide high-performance, mass-producible, inexpensive and reproducible membrane electrode assemblies and fuel cells.SOLUTION: A membrane electrode assembly comprises at least two electrochemically active electrodes which are separated by at least a polymer electrolyte membrane, the polymer electrolyte membrane having reinforcing material which penetrates into the polymer electrolyte membrane at least partially. The membrane electrode assembly is preferably manufactured with a method in which (i) a polymer electrolyte membrane is formed in the presence of the reinforcing material and (ii) the membrane and the electrodes are assembled in desired order. The membrane electrode assembly is particularly suited for applications to fuel cells. |
