Mercaptans having 8-20 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical are made by reacting a polymerized olefine including alicyclic olefines having the same number of carbon atoms with hydrogen sulphide at a temperature of 75-150 DEG C. (preferably 100-150 DEG C.) in the presence of a catalyst chosen from the class consisting of an activated clay, a mineral acid, activated carbon, silica gel, and metallic oxide catalysts. A little mineral acid may be used to promote activity of the catalyst. In examples, hydrogen sulphide is reacted in presence of activated clay with (1) tri-isobutylene; (2) a mixture of diamylenes; (3) a mixture of polymerized olefines having an average of thirteen carbon atoms. Di- and tetra-isobutylene are also mentioned. Specification 625,647, [Group IV (a)], is referred to. |
