[Class 51 (i)] Black liquor from paper pulp mills is injected vertically into the combustion chamber of a boiler with water-cooled walls by means of a nozzle 4 pivoted at 5, inlets 6 and 7 being provided for primary and secondary air respectively. The particles of liquor are 'substantially dried before reaching the bottom of the chamber where combustion takes place, or in a modification one or more of the walls of the chamber have a sloping surface on which the particles first fall. The chemicals contained in the liquor are recovered from the combustion residues.
