PURPOSE: An intra prediction mode encoding/decoding method and an apparatus thereof are provided to derive a most probable mode (MPM) from a peripheral prediction unit during the encoding/decoding of an intra prediction mode, and perform alignment operation according to the presence of an MPM having the same prediction mode as the intra prediction mode of a current prediction unit among the derived MPMs, thereby reducing the computational complexity of an image encoder/decoder. CONSTITUTION: If there is an MPM having the same prediction mode as the intra prediction mode of a current prediction unit among MPMs derived from a peripheral prediction unit adjacent to the current prediction unit, an encoder and/or decoder encodes and/or decodes an index indicating which MPM is identical to the intra prediction mode of the current prediction unit (S1010~S1030). If not so, the encoder and/or decoder align the derived MPMs based on the mode value of the MPM.
