PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition used in an operation mode utilizing vertical alignability and having negative permittivity anisotropy, and suitable for providing a liquid crystal device having a good compatibility, and a high response rate and a high display quality in a broad temperature range; and to provide a liquid crystal device using the liquid crystal composition.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition contains ≥30 mass% of a compound represented by formula (A): R-A-Z-A-Z-(A)m-Z-(A)n-Ras a first component, and at least one compound selected from compounds represented by formula (B-1): R-Cy-Ph(3F)-C≡C-Ph-Rand formula (B-2): R-Cy-Ph-Ras a second component.
