The method involves emitting an ultrasonic signal from an ultrasonic transmitter (3) attached to the motor vehicle (1), and receiving an ultrasonic signal by an ultrasonic receiver (4) mounted at a distance from the ultrasonic transmitter. The speed of the crosswind is calculated from the time required for the ultrasonic signal from the ultrasonic transmitter to the ultrasonic receiver. The ultrasonic transmitter and the ultrasonic receiver are formed as an ultrasonic transmitting and receiving unit (5). An independent claim is included for a device for determining the speed of crosswind acting on a motor vehicle.
