发明名称 Improvements relating to electric battery-filling devices
摘要 735,441. Batteries. JOYCE, A. A. Nov. 24, 1953 [Aug. 25, 1952; March 12, 1953], Nos. 21338/52 and 6863/53. Class 53. A battery filling or topping-up device comprises a spigot 20 to fit the mouth of a bottle containing electrolyte and a nozzle 4 with a branch 12 connected to the spigot by a rubber connector 14. The spigot is covered with a rubber sheath 22 which is formed with projections 26 interlocking with recesses 27 in the free end of the spigot to prevent relative turning between the sheath and spigot. Within the nozzle 4 is a slidable tube 29, Fig. 12, having air and water passages 31, 30, the lower end of the air passage being cut away as shown at 34 and the water passage having at its upper end an opening 39, a smaller opening 40 being provided in the air passage. The top of the tube carries a valve head 38 which normally rests on a seat 36, Fig. 5, and cuts off the supply of liquid from the bottle. When the nozzle is introduced into the filling opening of the battery the tube 29 makes contact with the separators or a perforated plate covering them and is raised in the nozzle 4 causing the valve head 38 to open the passages 30, 31 to the chamber 35 in the upper end of the nozzle. Water then flows from the bottle down the channel 16 in the branch 12 and through the passage 30 into the battery. A channel 15 for the passage of air into the bottle is partially closed by a perforated disc 69. When the liquid in the battery reaches the nozzle it closes the passages 30, 31 and the flow of liquid from the bottle ceases and both passages 30, 31 become filled with liquid to the same height. On removing the device from the battery the tube 29 falls within the nozzle 4, as shown in Fig. 1. The valve 38 then closes on the seat 36 and the opening 34 is exposed which renders the effective length of the air passage 31 shorter than the passage 30 and both passages are emptied of liquid by syphon action. The lift of the valve head 38 may be limited by an adjustable screw 45. For ascertaining whether the electrolyte in the battery is above or below the required level a bulb 1 may be provided leading to a passage 3 in the nozzle, as shown in Fig. 3. The feel of the bulb when compressed gives the required indication. In an alternative construction instead of the device shown in Fig. 1 being attached to a bottle it is attached to the end of a receptacle 58, Fig. 20, supplied with water from a hose attached to the tube 60. Water is admitted to the receptacle and air allowed to escape by means of manuallyoperated valves 63, 64 which are so arranged that when the knob 65 is depressed the valve 64 opens to put the receptacle into communication with the atmosphere through a passage 62 before the valve 63 opens to admit the water. The filling opening of the battery may be provided with a depending adjustable tube serving as a guide for the nozzle and having a cross-bar or flange at its lower end to limit the extent to which the nozzle can be lowered into the battery.
