An air cooled condenser for condensing gasses and vapours comprises a glass inner tube 1 having a bore 3 therethrough, a metal outer tube 2 having a bore 8 therethrough and two ends. The inner tube passes through the bore of the outer tube 2. A seal (15, 16, figs 3 & 4) at each end of the outer tube seals the outer tube to the inner tube so as to define a sealed space 11 between the inner and the outer tubes. The space contains a liquid (water) 12 in contact with the inner and outer tubes. The outer tube has a plurality of internal and external fins, which may be rigid. The inner tube may have a plurality of protrusions 6. The seals may have flat portions (32, figs 8 & 9) to prevent the condenser from rolling when placed on a flat surface. The condenser is commonly used in a vertical orientation (fig 11) whereby condensate runs down the internal bore under gravity and collects in a flask (101). |
