The method involves recording a temporal sequence of images of surrounding areas (5,6) of a motor vehicle (1) by a camera (3) of a collision warning system (2). Another motor vehicle (4) is identified in the surrounding area in the images of a computing device of the collision warning system. A current position of an illumination unit of the latter vehicle is determined by the computing device based on the temporal sequence of images, and depending on the current condition of the illumination unit, it is decided by the computing device whether the driver is warned or not.
