The method involves generating a total power consumption curve (11) of consumer appliances (1) attached to a common power connection, and evaluating the total power consumption curve to obtain an evaluation result. A pattern in the total power consumption curve is compared with a pattern (12) of a power consumption curve (13) of an individual appliance, for identifying the functional and non-functional appliances. A monitoring result is generates based on the evaluation result, and a message including the monitoring result is output over a remote communication link (2). An independent claim is also included for a monitoring arrangement for monitoring a building.
