A separator, comprising a porous base material layer, and a surface layer provided on at least the main surface of the base material layer and having an uneven shape. The surface layer includes: first particles that form the main body of a convex section, in order to form the convex section in the uneven shape; second particles having an average particle diameter smaller than the first particles, covering at least part of the surface of the first particles, and also covering at least part of the surface of the base material layer protruding between the first particles; and a resin material.
