A method of format conversion comprising: receiving input image data having an input image format; providing output image data for displaying an output image on a display, the output image having a stereoscopic output format; determining whether the input image format can be converted to the stereoscopic output format; converting the input image format to the stereoscopic output format only if it is determined that the input image format can be converted to the stereoscopic output format; wherein the converting is performed according to a predefined relationship between the input image format and the stereoscopic output format, and wherein the input image format and the stereoscopic output format are different.
