Roll Peening Tooling and Process

A peening tool (22) includes at least one first roller (36) having a peening surface disposed about and along a first core (30). At least a portion of the at least one first roller (36) is configured to contact a component (18) to be peened along a length. The length extends along at least a portion of the first core (30). The at least one first roller (36) is configured to provide line contact on the component (18) along the length. A profile of the at least one first roller (36) is determined based on a profile of the component (18). The peening tool (22) also includes a backer (31) disposed in register with the at least one first roller (36) such that the at least one first roller (31) moves with the backer (31) during peening. The at least one first roller (36) and the backer (31) are configured to be arranged on opposing surfaces of the component (18). The peening parameters and controller setting may be predicted from peening models.
