Process for yield improvement in the recovery of essentially mineral-free lactose comprises: subjecting whey to a separation process; optionally concentration the obtained lactose rich fraction to main stream and subjecting to demineralization; cooling the demineralized residue; and separating the lactose crystals from the mother liquor, and dehydrating to obtain a first amount of lactose, where the mother liquor separated from the main stream is subjected to e.g. demineralization, cooling, separation of crystals and drying process and mixed with the first amount. Process for yield improvement in the recovery of essentially mineral-free lactose comprises (a) subjecting whey to a separation process to obtain a protein-rich and a lactose rich fraction; (b) optionally concentration the lactose rich fraction to main stream and subjecting the main stream to demineralization in which sparingly soluble salts are precipitated; cooling the demineralized residue optionally after further concentration to precipitate crystalline lactose; and separating the lactose crystals from the mother liquor, and dehydrating to obtain a first amount of lactose, where the mother liquor separated from the main stream is subjected to a demineralization, concentration, cooling, separation of crystals and drying process and thus the obtained second set of lactose is mixed with the first amount.
