The method involves delaying the passage of the use of a low pressure exhaust gas recirculation (LP EGR) circuit (20) towards the use of a high pressure exhaust gas recirculation (HP EGR) circuit (10), to delay the arrival of exhaust gas recirculated by the HP EGR circuit. A valve (21) of the LP EGR circuit is closed, and a valve (11) of the HP EGR circuit is opened after waiting for a time. The valve of the HP EGR circuit is closed, and the valve of the LP EGR circuit is opened simultaneous at the time of the passage of the use of the HP EGR circuit towards the use of the LP EGR circuit. An independent claim is also included for a powertrain for a car.
