PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for modifying a porous substrate used for gas separation and a modified porous substrate.SOLUTION: The method for modifying a porous substrate includes the steps of: coating the surface of the porous substrate with at least one metal hydroxide; and firing the porous substrate having the metal hydroxide layer to convert the metal hydroxide layer to a metal oxide layer having a continuous phase to form a modified porous substrate. The modified porous substrate includes a porous substrate and a metal hydroxide layer having a continuous phase coated on the porous substrate (here, the metal hydroxide layer having a continuous phase contains an oxide of a first metal and a second metal different from the first metal).
