PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device and method capable of reducing erroneous determination, through changing an area for determining the movement of a subject to be variable according to a condition of a subject or a photographic parameter.SOLUTION: A focusing device includes: means 113 for generating an AF evaluation value from a preset AF frame; control means 114 for driving a focus lens 105 for adjusting focus; means 116 for detecting a predetermined subject; means 114 for discriminating existence of a distance change of the subject referring to a detection result; means 114 for determining a discrimination area for discriminating the existence of the distance change. When driving and controlling a focus lens according to the distance change of the subject, according to the discrimination result by the means for discriminating, with regard to the subject within an area determined by discrimination area determination means, the control means performs a tracking drive operation corresponding to the distance change of the subject if it is determined that there exists a distance change of the subject, and if it is determined that there exists no distance change, the control means restricts the tracking drive operation. |
