The internal combustion engine (5) has an exhaust line (10) and a compressor (40) that is arranged in an air duct (50), where the fresh air supplied to a cylinder (8) of the combustion engine is compressed by the compressor. Another air duct (70) provided downstream of the compressor is branched off from the former air line to supply a burner (60) with compressed fresh air. The exhaust gas temperature of the combustion engine is increased by the burner. The supply of fresh air to the burner is inhibited by in a check valve in the latter air duct an operating condition of the engine. A measuring element, particularly a hot-film air-mass meter, is arranged for determining a mass flow of the fresh air supplied to the burner. An air filter is arranged upstream of the compressor. An independent claim is included for a method for the after-treatment of the exhaust gases of the internal combustion engine.
