An essentially box-shaped, double-walled heat exchanger is installed between the heating boiler of a heating installation and the chimney. Arranged in the direction of flow of the flue gas in the interior of the heat exchanger, through which the flue gas flows, is a plurality of baffle plates which in each case have laterally offset openings. The heat extracted from the flue gas is passed on to fresh air which flows through the double-walled heat exchanger between the inner and the outer wall. The fresh air supply is controlled as a function of the temperature of the heat exchanger in order to avoid the dew point from being undershot in the chimney. <IMAGE>
