PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system of attaching a limited amount of buttress material to a surgical instrument such that the material is localized on the jaws of the surgical instrument.SOLUTION: A surgical instrument having a system of retaining buttress material includes: a handle; an elongate member extending distally from the handle; a jaw assembly mounted adjacent a distal end of the elongate member and including a first jaw and a second jaw; a buttress material; and a buttress retainer having edges defining an open center portion and engaged with at least one of the first jaw and the second jaw, the buttress retainer edges lying outwardly of the staple pockets, and the open center portion being sized to releasably retain the buttress material. |
