The method involves operating the engine in a secondary operating state in which second amount of fuel is injected into the cylinder per work cycle. The movement behavior of the fuel in the primary portion of the injection process is determined. The movement behavior of the fuel injector in primary operating state is determined based on the determined physical activity of the primary portion of injection process.
