Disclosed are various methods that enable a device of a second system to select a channel that utilises a frequency of a first system while avoiding harmful interference to the first system, for example in a white space utilisation system. First system channels that are available for use by the second system device are listed in a database that is made available to the second system device. In one embodiment an estimation is made of the strength of the first system signal and an available channel from the database selected based on the estimated signal strength, with the signals with the lowest signal strength being selected first. In an alternative embodiment the channel selection is done by estimating channel gain between a first system transmitter of the second system device and selecting frequency blocks based on the estimated channel gain. In a further embodiment the channel selection is done by estimating interference caused by primary system to the secondary system in different channels and selecting channels based on the estimated levels of interference. |
