PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently culturing photosynthetic bacteria and to provide the photosynthetic bacteria.SOLUTION: This method for culturing photosynthetic bacteria is characterized by culturing them on a culture medium comprising chitin and/or chitosan. The preferable photosynthetic bacterium is Rhodopseudomonas palustris which is a kind of purple non-sulfur bacteria. The multiplication rate increases in the presence of chitin in the medium independently of conditions such as anaerobic conditions or aerobic conditions, or the presence or absence of light irradiation.
