The method involves arranging selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst elements (23, 31) in catalytic converters (2, 3). A metering device (22) is provided for metering a reducing agent solution, which is provided upstream to one of the catalyst elements. An internal combustion engine (1) is connected with an SCR catalyst system while the starting cooling of the engine. A reducing agent is metered in the catalyst element by the dosing device and increases the temperature of the catalyst element with a velocity of about 2 degree Celsius per second. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for operating of a selective catalytic reduction catalyst system (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for operating of a selective catalytic reduction catalyst system.
