PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for controlling the extreme wind speed of a wind turbine are provided to reducing the operation stop time of the turbine, thereby improving the availability and the annual energy production (AEP) of the turbine. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for controlling the extreme wind speed of a wind turbine (10) includes a regulating part (110), a wind speed detecting part (120), and a control part (130). The regulating part regulates at least one between the rotating speed of a blade (11) and the output amount of a generator (12) in the turbine. The wind speed detecting part detects a wind speed on the turbine. When the wind speed is over a predetermined shut down speed, the control part controls the regulating part in order to reduce at least one between the rotating speed and the output amount.
