The present invention provides a mail downloading method, client, server and system, belonging to the technical field of computers and networks. The method comprises: step 1, generating option content for controlling a text document downloading behavior and transmitting the option content to a mail downloading client for outputting; step 2, acquiring, from the mail downloading client, trigger information for downloading a text document or downloading both a text document and an attachment; step 3, acquiring a text document of an mail or both the text document and an attachment and performing data packing; and step 4, after packing the foregoing data, sending the packed data to the corresponding mail downloading client. By means of the present invention, text content of an opened electronic mail can be downloaded separately, or when an attachment of an electronic mail is downloaded, text content of the electronic mail can be downloaded synchronously.
