The telescopic mast 10 comprises a lowest tubular section 11 that has nested within it a second lowermost tubular section 12 wherein there is a clearance in between the two tubular sections. At least one spacer element 28 projects inwardly from the top of the lowest section to close off the clearance and provides sliding contact with the second section. The mast is characterised in that a cable 18 passes beneath the second section and is attached to an anchor point 19 at an elevated position within the lowest section on one side of the and a pulley 20 at an elevated position within the lowest portion on the other side of the second section. The cable is attached to a winch 22 which is below the pulley and the cable exits the lowest tube via an opening in a lower portion of the lowest section. The mast may have a polygonal, such as rectangular, cross section. The second section may receive a further, upper, tubular section. The mast may be permanently mounted on a vehicle. The winch may be located within a lockable housing.
