PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling the horizontal position of a washing machine and a method thereof are provided to control the height of a washing machine after sensing the horizontal state of the washing machine at every starting of the washing machine. CONSTITUTION: A slope measurement unit(10) includes at least one of an acceleration sensor, a gravity sensor, or a gyro sensor, and measures slope of the washing machine. A height adjustment unit adjusts the height of the washing machine. A control unit(30) detects the horizontal state of the washing machine based on the measured slope, and forming the horizontal state of the washing machine by operation of the height adjustment unit.
