A FREIGHT CONTAINER STORAGE AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR CARRYING OUT THE SAME

A system for storing and retrieving ISO freight containers including a first supporting structure and a second supporting structure. Each supporting structure has at least an upper portion and is separated from the other by a fixed distance. At least a section of the upper portion of the first supporting structure is at least substantially parallel and directly opposite to at least a section of the upper portion of the second supporting structure. Both supporting structures extend to a height at least substantially equivalent to the height of an ISO freight container. The system also includes at least one freight container handling crane having a pair of base legs located at distal ends from each other connected by a supporting framework and a spreader between the base legs. The pair of base legs is positioned such that the supporting framework and spreader straddle across the fixed distance between the sections of the upper portions of both supporting structures in an at least substantially perpendicular orientation to the at least substantially parallel sections of the upper portions of both supporting structures.FIGURE 4
