The method involves enabling ammonia supply of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyzer (30) selectively from a start storage (36) or from a main storage (34). The start storage is filled with ammonia from the main storage. Operation of the main storage is taken place for filling the start storage and/or for ammonia supply of the SCR catalyzer based on fulfillment of energy criteria, where the energy criteria is based on absolute energetic heating effort for heating of the main storage and/or energy efficiency of heating of the main storage. The ammonia storage material of the main storage is selected from a group consisting of ammonia-complexing metal salt e.g. magnesium chloride ammoniate, calcium chloride ammoniate and strontium chloride ammoniate, and ammonia-absorbing material e.g. activated carbon and zeolite. An independent claim is also included for an ammonia storage system.
