ORGANIC NITRATES AS IGNITION ENHANCERS

The use of an organic nitrate in a diesel fuel composition is described for the purpose of reducing the ignition delay of the fuel and/or for increasing its cetane number to a defined level. The organic nitrate may be a terpene nitrate. Methods of using a organic nitrate for achieving a desired cetane number, diesel fuel compositions comprising the organic nitrate, and methods of operating a compression ignition engine are also described.
