The invention relates to a method and apparatus for casting a body of metal in an annular mold that has a casting ring that confines the metal as it solidifies to form the form-sustaining body having a cross-sectional area that is non-cylindrical and asymmetrical, or that has an axis that is non-vertical. The casting ring has a surface that is tapered at an angle with respect to the mold axis at least at points where the metal contacts the surface. The surface is shaped such that the angle of taper varies around the casting ring to accommodate splaying forces of different magnitude that are generated in the body of metal due to the non-cylindrical asymmetrical shape of the body, or to the non-vertical orientation of the axis.
