This focal plane shutter is provided with: a substrate having an opening; a front curtain and rear curtain that open and close the opening; a rear curtain actuator for driving the rear curtain; a drive member that receives the motive force of the rear curtain actuator and drives the rear curtain; and a buffer member that the drive member contacts with the rear curtain in the state of being retracted from the opening. The rear curtain actuator causes the drive member during charge driving to separate from the state of being contacted to the buffer member and then to re-contact the buffer member, and then to start exposure driving.
