PURPOSE: A mobile terminal and a controlling method are provided to increase the convenience of a user when inputting a character string. CONSTITUTION: A display unit(151) displays a character string generated in a character input mode. A control unit(180) predicts a symbol which is inserted into a cursor location based on the cusor location and the character string. The control unit displays the predicted symbol through the display module. A storage unit(160) stores a symbol input pattern including a symbol insertion location. The control unit predicts the symbol to be inserted to the cursor location based on the symbol insertion location.
