[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXVII and XXXVII] A control mechanism in combination with a number of internal-combustion engines each of which has associated with it a fuel control device for controlling the supply of fuel thereto and an ignition system, comprises a manually or foot-operable master control-member and a selector switch movable into a number of positions to pre-select any of the engines or a combination thereof for operation and to bring about energization of the ignition system or systems pertaining thereto while simultaneously establishing operating connection between the master control member and the fuel control devices of any of the pre-selected engines or any pre-selected combination thereof. Internalcombustion engines are indicated diagrammatically at 10, 10a. Each has a carburetter 12, 12a and a starting and ignition system 11, 11a. A switch 43 is arranged to connect a source of current such as a battery 56 to either or to both of the starting and ignition systems or to disconnect them altogether. A wire 37, leading to the system 11 is connected by a further wire 36 to a solenoid 26 so that the solenoid is energized when the system 11 is connected to the battery. The solenoid operates a clutch-member 30 so that an operating lever 14 of the carburetter 12 can be actuated by a rod 15 on which a foot pedal 19 is mounted. Thus the pedal can control the carburetter when the solenoid is energized. Similarly a solenoid 26a energized by the current supplied to the system 11a actuates a clutch 30a so that a lever 14a of the carburetter 12a can be actuated by the pedal 19. The switch includes two rows of contacts, one in the plane of the paper and one below it, and adjacent contacts in different rows are bridged by shoes 40, 40a. The left-hand contacts 39, 47 in the plane of the paper are connected to the wire 37 and the right-hand contacts are connected to a corresponding wire 37a. All the other contacts 50-53 are connected to the battery. In a modification, three engines can be operated either together, alone or in any combination by means of a speciallydesigned switch (see Group XXXVII). It is stated that the arrangement can be varied for the control of more than three engines. Known starting systems for starting the engine may be used. For instance the ignition circuit when closed may actuate a relay bringing about energization of an electric starter motor whereupon the relay after a predetermined time, controlled by a delayed-action relay switch, moves into an inoperative position and returns to its operative position only after the ignition circuit is broken and closed again.
