[Problem] To provide a fuel cell which can decompose and purify a biomass, an organic compound, an inorganic compound, a waste material, a waste solution, an environmental pollutant and the like by means of a catalytic action with high efficiency and, at the same time, can generate electricity and produce hydrogen without requiring the irradiation with light. [Solution] Provided is a method for decomposing and purifying the fuel through a fuel cell reaction and generating electricity and producing hydrogen without requiring the application of any external energy such as the irradiation with light or the like, said method comprising: providing a composite anode composed of three layers, i.e., an electrode base layer, a porous semiconductor layer and a catalyst layer; immersing the composite anode in an aqueous solution or an aqueous suspension each containing at least any one of a biomass, a biomass waste material, an organic compound and an inorganic compound as a fuel; placing a counter cathode for oxygen reduction in a liquid phase composed of the aqueous solution or the aqueous suspension or a liquid/gas phase interface; and supplying oxygen to the liquid phase or the gas phase in which the cathode has been placed or allowing oxygen to co-exist in the liquid phase or the gas phase in which the cathode has been placed, thereby causing a fuel cell reaction on the cathode. |
