<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for press machines capable of preventing damage to a press machine body and a mold caused by overload. <P>SOLUTION: The control method for press machines uses a load measuring instrument 1 for measuring the load applied to the press machine body and the mold. The control method calculates the load increasing rate from the load measured value measured by the load measuring instrument 1, and reduces the lowering speed of a slide when the load increasing rate exceeds a predetermined permissible load increasing rate.
