PURPOSE: A lithium ion battery is provided to block current flow by breaking tabs by using a stress generated at expansion of a battery, thereby preventing overcharging, explosion, or ignition. CONSTITUTION: A lithium ion battery comprises an electrode assembly(200) which has a positive electrode plate, a negative electrode plate, and a separator; a positive electrode tab(300) and a negative electrode tab(400) which are respectively extended from the ends of the positive electrode plate and negative electrode plate; a battery case which accommodates the electrode assembly and is sealed such that the positive electrode tab and negative electrode tab protrude upwards. At least one electrode tab of the positive tab or negative tab has one or more breakage grooves(500). The breakage groove is a notching type breakage groove.
