PURPOSE: An autofocus device and a control method thereof are provided to correct the brightness of an image signal and to adjust a focus by using a contrast value calculated from the corrected image signal, when a calculated contrast value is below a reference value. CONSTITUTION: An imaging device captures light from a subject and generates an image signal. A contrast calculation part(201) calculates an image contrast value from the image signal. When the calculated contrast value is below a reference value, a correction part(204) corrects the brightness of the image signal. A focus adjustment part(207) adjusts a focus by using a contrast value calculated from the corrected image signal.
