PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a target for an underlying material of a Co-based or Fe-based magnetic recording medium, capable of effectively decreasing the fall of particles from the target during sputtering.

SOLUTION: The target, consisting of a magnesium monoxide-based (MgO-based) composite that has a cubic crystal structure, for the underlying material of the Co-based or Fe-based magnetic recording medium, wherein the MgO-based composite contains a single or plural oxides.
