The insulating material comprises an aerogel-particle and inorganic and/or organic binders, where an amount of the binding agent is less than 2 vol.%, and an expanded and/or extruded styrene polymerization particle. A part of the expanded and/or extruded styrene polymerization particle: is unevenly distributed and arranged in the insulating material; and forms an outer covering layer. The covering layer is substantially free from the aerogel particles, and has a layer thickness of 5-30 mm. A thermal conductivity of the insulating material is 0.018 W/(mK). An independent claim is included for a method for preparing an insulating material.
