The cutting tool includes a tool body (12, Figure 1) having a plurality of pockets 26 for receiving cutting inserts (not shown). Each pocket includes a bottom support surface 30, an axial support surface 32, a radial support surface 34 and a corner relief 36 between the bottom support surface and the radial support surface. A non-circular recess 40 is formed proximate at least one of the pockets. A coolant passage 38 is disposed within the recess. The recess reduces a tensile stress in the cutting tool during a machining operation. The recess may be oblong, oval or elliptical shaped. The recess may have a minimum depth 44 that is approximately one-half a maximum width 42 of the recess. The cutting tool may be a helical end mill (10, Figure 1).
