<PICT:1029402/C6-C7/1> In a method and apparatus for heat treating metal products, particularly open-wound coils of strip, the products are treated in at least one pair of cells, of which each cell is provided with means for circulating a suitable gas round the product and with means by which controlled minor amounts of gas may be exchanged between the cells in closed circuit so that equalisation of temperature between the two products is achieved. As illustrated in Fig.1 coil 18 stands on plate 1 and is enclosed by cover 8, which is itself surrounded by bell 11 equipped with burner 10 and outlet 12 to heat exchanger 13. Gas is caused to circulate through the turns of the coil and the central orifice by contrarotating impellors 31,32 working in shield 30 and by deflector plates 37. Annular manifold 15 having openings 17 is sorrounded by manifold 19 having openings 20, these manifolds being connected through valves 22 and 26 to conduits 24 and 28 respectively by means of which gas is exchanged with a similar cell. An arrangement of cells and pipe-work including a blower for circulating gas and a heat exchanger with the aid of which a cell may be isolated and its charge cooled are also disclosed. |
