A sample of solid particles of different size, shape or specific gravity is separated into fractions by introducing the sample into the fluid stream of a cyclone elutriator, retaining in the elutriator particles with a settling rate greater than a predetermined minimum during a time sufficient to ensure that they repeatedly traverse the flow pattern of the elutriator, and finally discharging these retained particles from the elutriator. The cyclone 1, Fig. 2, has a tangential fluid inlet 5, a vortex finder 6 and an underflow discharge orifice 4 above which is located a detachable, transparent-sided sample container 7 provided with a plug 9 and a discharge valve 11. At the start of an operation the solid particles forming the sample are contained in the container with the orifice 4 sealed by the plug 9 and the valve 11 closed. Fluid is then introduced in the cyclone at a greater flow rate than that selected for elutriation and the plug 9 is removed. The underflow discharge enters the container 7 and creates a swirling flow entraining the particles in the cyclone. The slower settling particles are discharged through the vortex finder 6 while the faster settling ones are returned by the fluid flow to the container 7 and recirculated. The flow rate is then decreased to and maintained at a predetermined value to obtain the required separation during elutriation at the end of which it is further increased and the valve 11 is opened to effect discharge of the faster settling particles. A number of similar cyclones may be connected in series for separating the particles into a number of sized fractions. The sample to be elutriated may be placed in the sample container of the first cyclone or it may be introduced in the fluid flowing to that cylone. The inlet of each succeeding cyclone is connected to the vortex finder of the preceding one.</p>
